Target Audience

Statement of Need/Program Overview 

Innovations in CGM technology have the promise of improved glucose control and quality of life. Several studies have demonstrated the safety, efficacy, and cost effectiveness of this technological revolution. The current COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to reconsider the ways in which effective diabetes management is delivered during these challenging times - both in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The availability of connected CGM data facilitates effective diabetes management remotely. Recently, the FDA has allowed for the use of real-time CGM (rtCGM) in hospital settings to support COVID-19 healthcare-related efforts during the current pandemic. Remote patient monitoring facilitates timely medical intervention and has the potential to limit staff exposure to the novel coronavirus and preserve vital personal protective equipment (PPE). This program will elucidate the burden of diabetes and describe multifaceted clinical and administrative strategies to promote quality care and manage costs while improving outcomes for affected plan members.
